DRY EYES is an endurance performance piece using repetitive action to overcome the physiological response to blink while staring into a fan. Using the common standing oscillating fan, an object of comfort, as a training instrument to overcome discomfort and somatic stress, the performance piece presents a somber— yet much needed— reminder of resistance and resiliency, especially within the sociocultural context of Filipinx-American history.
2018-19, Photo and video stills from 4 of 5 performances with a fan at San Francisco Art Institute campuses, San Francisco, CA, Performance durations: 5-11 minutes. Documented by the artist and SFAI Marketing team.
